Waldorf bar security guard shooting goes to prosecutors for review

A security guard at a Waldorf, Maryland bar shot a man who stabbed a patron, the sheriff's office said. What the case means for armed posts and use of force.

A security guard patrols an industrial area at night, shining a flashlight along a chain-link fence.

A private security guard at The Cut Bar & Restaurant in Waldorf, Maryland, shot and killed a man who had stabbed another man during a fight inside the bar early on October 31, the Charles County Sheriff's Office said. Detectives are investigating the death as a homicide and will present the case to the State's Attorney's Office for review, WJLA reported.

Key points#

What the sheriff's office described#

The preliminary investigation points to an altercation between two men inside the bar, during which one of them pulled a knife and threatened the other, the sheriff's office said. A private security guard assigned to the business tried to intervene and take control of the man's hand and the knife.

The man then stabbed the other man once in the abdomen, and as he appeared to try again, the guard fired and hit him once in the chest, according to the release. He walked outside, collapsed in the parking lot and was found with the knife still in his hand. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The sheriff's office identified him as a 41-year-old Waldorf man.

The man who was stabbed was treated for injuries that did not appear to be life threatening, the sheriff's office said.

What is not known yet#

Authorities have not released details on what started the confrontation or whether the two men knew each other, FOX 5 DC reported. Officials have not disclosed the name of the security guard or of the man who was stabbed, the station said.

The investigation is active, the sheriff's office said, and the State's Attorney's Office will review the case. The reports we read do not describe the guard's training, his license or the bar's security rules, so this post draws no conclusion about his actions.

What it means for your company#

  • Write down your use-of-force rules. Every armed post needs clear written rules on de-escalation, when to step in and when to wait for law enforcement. Have an attorney review them, because the law differs by state.
  • Train for the posts you staff. Bars and nightlife venues can bring fights, alcohol and edged weapons together in small spaces. Make sure site training covers them, with refreshers.
  • Agree on the post orders with the client. Spell out who handles a fight, who calls emergency services and where officers stand at closing time, in the post orders for each site.
  • Report fast and keep the evidence. Have officers write an incident report while details are fresh, list witnesses and ask the client to keep any video.
  • Plan for the hours after a shooting. Decide in advance who calls your attorney and insurer, and how the company supports the officer while the case is reviewed.

In Guardix, officers file reports from the mobile app while clocked in, and photos taken with the app's camera are stamped with the date, time and location.
