Securitas third quarter results: technology reaches 35% of sales
Securitas third quarter results show technology at 35% of sales and cautious buyers in some markets. What smaller guard company owners can take from them.

Securitas reported its third quarter results on October 23, with technology and solutions rising to 35% of group sales from 33% a year earlier, the company said. The Stockholm-based company said parts of its market remain cautious, with buyers taking longer to decide, in its interim report.
Key points#
- Group sales were about SEK 38.6 billion in the quarter, and the operating margin was 8.2%, Securitas reported.
- North America posted 3% organic sales growth and a 9.7% operating margin, the report shows.
- Security services made up 63% of group sales, down from 65%, according to the report.
- Owners should note where buyers are spending, and show clients the value of the service.
What the numbers show#
Reported organic sales growth was flat for the quarter, and 3% after adjusting for the close-down of the company's SCIS government business, the company said. A year earlier those figures were 3% and 4%.
In North America, organic sales growth slowed to 3% from 6%, while the operating margin rose to 9.7% from 9.5%, the interim report shows. Chief Executive Magnus Ahlqvist said the Technology and Guarding units in the region both delivered solid growth, in the report.
Real sales growth in technology and solutions was 6% in the quarter, and installation order intake hit a record in North America and Ibero-America, the company said.
Where buyers are spending#
Ahlqvist said the company's security services are well received among data centers, defense and pharmaceutical clients, in the report. He also described more selective purchasing and longer decision cycles in certain markets and client segments.
The company also said it expects to exit the last contracts in the SCIS government business by the end of October, according to the report.
One global company's report does not describe every local market. Still, it is a useful look at what a large global security company is seeing.
What it means for your company#
- Expect longer sales cycles. If buyers near you are also more careful, keep following up on proposals instead of closing them out early.
- Look at your client mix. Check which of your client types are growing and which ones are shopping on price alone.
- Show the work. Clients who compare vendors want proof of what they got, so regular client reports can help at renewal time.
- Decide your technology position. Know what you offer, what you partner on, and what you leave out, so you can answer the question when a client asks.
