Why San Jose

Security in San Jose.

Build your San Jose request around the actual property and duties. Depending on the assignment, relevant details may include office reception, contractor entry, and controlled parts of a property. Request clear procedures for badges, deliveries, and after-hours access approvals.

Tell us which responsibilities must happen at the same time and which require a continuously staffed post. A clear coverage plan helps you compare proposals for the same assignment.

Licensing in California

Under California’s Private Security Services Act (Business and Professions Code), companies providing contracted guard services need a Private Patrol Operator (PPO) license from the Bureau of Security and Investigative Services (BSIS). Every guard needs a BSIS guard registration (guard card): an 8-hour Power to Arrest and Appropriate Use of Force course before the card is issued, 32 hours of skills training within 6 months (16 of them in the first 30 days), and 8 hours of training every year after that. Armed guards also need a BSIS exposed firearm permit, with a firearms course, range qualification and assessment; a personal concealed-carry permit does not replace it. Check licenses on the BSIS verification page before service begins.

Find coverage that fits your operation

Unarmed Security Guards

Request a professional presence for entrances, reception, visitor check-in, access control, observation, and agreed patrols. Explain the responsibilities so a responding company can propose appropriate staffing and supervision.

Armed Security Guards

Request coverage using appropriately authorized armed personnel. Describe the property and duties so the provider can assess the assignment and confirm the necessary company and officer qualifications.

Mobile Patrol Services

Request defined property checks for parking areas, building exteriors, gates, and other agreed locations. Ask about visit frequency, documentation, exceptions, and incident escalation.

Overnight and Around-the-Clock Coverage

Request evening, overnight, weekend, or continuous service. The proposal should explain shift changes, relief, supervision, and the response to an officer absence.

Temporary and Event Security

Request coverage for an event, project, seasonal need, or temporary change in operations. Include the dates, operating conditions, access points, and responsibilities that need attention.

From your request to a security proposal

  1. Describe the coverage

Share the location, duties, hours, requested start date, and any special conditions.

  2. Connect with potential providers

Guardix helps identify companies to consider. Each responding provider confirms its capabilities and availability.

  3. Review the proposal

Compare staffing, supervision, qualifications, reporting, insurance evidence, pricing, and written terms before selecting a company.

Armed or unarmed?

Most security posts are unarmed. Armed coverage is a decision you make with the provider, based on your site, your risks and your policies.

Unarmed officers

BSIS-registered guards

  • Access control, front desks and lobbies
  • Patrols of buildings, parking and grounds
  • Guard card plus required training hours
  • Usually the lower-cost option
Armed officers

BSIS firearms permit

  • Banks, cash handling and high-value goods
  • Sites with a higher risk of violent crime
  • Guard card plus a BSIS firearms permit
  • Costs more for licensing, training and insurance

What goes in post orders

Post orders are the written instructions officers follow at your site. Good ones remove guesswork and make proposals easy to compare.

  • Where officers stand and which routes they patrol
  • Hours, breaks and shift changes
  • Who may enter, and how to check them
  • What to do for alarms, incidents and medical emergencies
  • Who to call, and when
  • Which reports to file and how fast

Each additional post or patrol adds officer hours, and large sites may need a supervisor.

Ongoing contracts are usually priced lower per hour than one-day or short-notice coverage.

Supervision, reporting software, vehicles and equipment may be included or billed separately.

Choose with confidence

How to choose a security company.

For ordinary contracted guard services, ask for the California BSIS Private Patrol Operator, or PPO, license. An individual guard card does not authorize a company to operate as a PPO. For covered guard assignments, confirm BSIS guard registration or the specific applicable exemption. Proprietary and other special categories are not interchangeable with contracted guard services. Use the state and local FAQs below to plan your checks. Confirm the actual service, company authorization, assigned personnel, and any armed or specialized-site conditions before service begins.

    Check the company license

Look up the company’s BSIS Private Patrol Operator license on the BSIS verification page, and match the legal name, number and status.

  2. 2

    Check guard registrations

Ask for each guard’s BSIS guard card and training records (8 hours before the card, 32 within six months, 8 every year). For armed posts, confirm a current BSIS exposed firearm permit.

  3. 3

Ask for a certificate of insurance

Request proof of general liability and workers’ compensation coverage, and ask whether you can be named as an additional insured.

  4. 4

    Ask for references

Talk to clients with similar properties, and ask how long they have used the company.

  5. 5

    Ask about supervision

Find out who checks on officers, how often, and who you call at 2 a.m. when something goes wrong.

  6. 6

    Get it in writing

Make sure the proposal covers post orders, staffing, rates for holidays and overtime, how absences are covered, reporting, and how to end the contract.

Ask for visibility along with coverage

Knowing what happened during a shift matters. Include Guardix-enabled reporting in your request if you want digital reports and operational visibility.

Ask responding companies about patrol records, attendance information, incident reports, and client portal access. You can also request relevant AI-assisted reporting or workflow features where available in the provider’s setup. Confirm what is included and who reviews the information.
